Home School Science Experiment Gone Yummy!

This week the boys are learning the 3 elements and the difference between a solution and a mixture... So I thought I would have a super fun Science experiment with them!!

Were gonna turn a liquid into a solid and combine a solute and a solvent to make a solution all in one YUMMY experiment!!

Solution: Milk and sugar
Mixture: Salt and Ice

This is what we need:

1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup milk or half & half
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
6 tablespoons rock salt
1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc)
1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag
Ice cubes

It's ice cream!

This is how we do it;

Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
Open and enjoy!

Review and Giveaway! Just In Time For Mother's Day

Becoming more 'earth-friendly' is not always an easy task.. You become accustomed to certain ways, a certain "clean". I've found a lot of cleaners out there that claim to be "all natural" or "environmentally safe"...That is until you start reading the back! Or your lucky enough to find organic only to try it out and it doesn't really do the job!

I was fortunate to be given some really great products from Ecostore USA, an all natural and organic company, to try out. Best of all No Nasty* Chemicals™ !

First let me just say when this company says they're Eco-friendly they mean it!! Everything shipped was made from recycled materials and the packing peanuts were made from soy. I was very impressed to see that!

Their Sleepytime Bath was just heaven! Its filled with aromatheraphy oils that calm and relax. Perfect for fussy babies and babies with sensitive skin! It left Caities skin feeling soft and clean.

I also just had to try their Vanilla Shampoo & Conditioner for dry and damaged hair. In my younger years, I was the girl that never had the same hair color the next time you saw her. So I was very excited to get my hands on this find! I know it's only been a few washings, but I'll tell you the first time I used it, I noticed a difference! I didn't have to brush my hair first then comb.. The comb slid right through! The mix of essential oils left my hair smelling amazing all day long!

Ecostore USA offers over 100 products ranging from personal care to household cleaners. Even a bleach alternative! Which I'm ordering!

The wonderful people at Ecostore USA are offering one of you a chance to win a $25 gift certificate!! Right now they are also offering free shipping on all orders $25 and up! Their collection of soaps would make great Mother's Day gifts!!

Quick Easy Natural and YUMMY!! And One OMG!

I don't post recipes because I never measure and it always comes out different....but I wanted to share these really yummy summer treats with everyone!!

Big on home made yummys why buy it if you can make it, and make it healthier and get everyone involved!

First off it's so super easy and the kids love to create their own.

My summer smoothie:
1c. plain non-fat yogurt
1c. all natural 100% apple juice NOT CONCENTRATE NO SUGAR ADDED
1c. frozen fresh berries(your choice)

The night before I place different berries in the freezer so they're ready for the next day. I have the kids pick out what they want measure it out. They get to do the dumping into the blender and hold the lid. Blend it to the consistency you like and ta da! Summer smoothie! Our favorite is black berries, strawberries and blue berries all mixed together!

Another summer yummy:
Non fat frozen yogurt
fresh pineapple
fresh watermelon

This is so simple

I cut up the fruit and mash it up just a little by hand to leave big chunks but get lots of juice. You pour the fruit mix over the frozen yogurt and top with some homemade whip cream! ( I use splenda instead of sugar when I make the cream so I don't feel as guilty).

Or my mom would do vanilla ice cream inside cantalope Yummy!

Perfect beside the pool treats.

Now I wish I could say I always ate that way but sadly nooo.. Lucky for you I'm gonna share my MOST favorite homemade ice cream with ya!

This is my homemade Secret (so shhh) Chocolate Fudge Ice Cream
I like this because I don't have a ice cream maker and I don't see spending butt loads of money on one either! Why when I got arms right?! Work out a little before you indulge.

5) 1oz sq unsweetened chocolate, melted
1) 14oz Sweetened condensed milk
4) egg yolks
2t vanilla
2c. half and half
2c. whipping cream, whipped NOT NON-DAIRY WHIPPED CREAM
1c. chopped walnuts

In large bowl you beat the chocolate, condensed milk, eggs yolk and vanilla really good. Throw in the nuts and stir. FOLD in the cream you've whipped. (the more you whip it the better the ice cream so tire yourself out...and then keep whipping! Stop when your arms feel like falling off, it's worth it, trust me!) Pour into a 2qt container and freeze for at least 5 hours.(or until firm)
I promise this is the best chocolate ice cream you'll ever taste!

"You Stink Mom!"

So the boys and I made up this new Holiday called "opposite day". They saw it on some cartoon and thought we need this in our lives! So I agreed May 1st would be the day for this "holiday". Well, I've heard mean things fly all day long followed by tiny giggles. But now I'm thinking "maybe it's their free day to tell mom what they really think".

Time Of Use

I wanted to bring light on this program I've found great! When Hubby and I moved into this beautiful, somewhat large, home a few years ago we were ecstatic! Not only was it big enough for all 6 to each have their own little area it had A/C!! In the desert here the usual was swamp. And ugh is that horrible during the monsoons! The temps ranging anywhere from nice to "even the devil ain't stopping!" The majority being the latter.

We have two living rooms, two baths, four bedrooms, very large kitchen, an office and laundry room so cooling this place is no easy task! Our electric bill ranged from $150 in winter to well over $200 in summer and maybe once over $300. But, when we began this "lessen our mark" journey, we replaced all bulbs in the house with those 'soft serve' looking ones and installed solar lighting all outside and thought there's gotta be more we can do! There was! Its called the time-of-use program with our electric cooperative.

Basically your charged .096 per kilowatt hour on regular service. With TOU your charged .041 pkh on any electricity you use during "off-peak". Which in the summer (Ap 1- Oct 31) is from 9pm-1pm. Plus all holidays and weekends are "off-peak" as well. "On-peak" it's .12pkh. During Nov1- Mar 31 the "off-peak" is 10-6 both am/pm.

Now, since it's too dang hot to go all day with no A/C at all what I do is save all laundry/dishes/ showers for the off peak times and anything else that takes a lot of electricity and keep the temp at 78. Last summer we hardly used the A/C "on-peak". Anytime it'd get too hot, me and the kids would just jump into the pool! Sadly this year it's not looking like will be able to do that, the kids cut the liner about a foot long multiple times.. I swear I have no idea what goes thru their heads! And we are NOT buying another one of those"disposable" pools from Wal-Mart again... $400 and its really only good a couple of summers. We want to save for a 'real' one. Back on point... we haven't had a bill over $100 since!

So if your have a electric company that offers it, I say give it a try because not only did we save a bunch I find us using a lot less!
